Each loop detector can manage 8 loops for 4 lane operation. However the loop detectors can be daisy-chained together to provide up to 12 lane operation. Each unit can also receive light phase information for use with red light systems.
As a vehicle passes over the loops, a profile is generated for each loop. For a typical car, the resolution in detail is around 0.2% of the peak response. The profile from each loop in a lane is compared, and the time between matching points used to calculate the speed and length of the vehicle. Each loop profile contains 2000 measurements per second. The loop detector has an RS422 output providing a message based interface.
